DESCRIPTION This version of the International Trusee Handbook is a downloadable PDF. This long-awaited international edition of NAIS's Trustee Handbook has been adapted for trustees who serve on school boards throughout the world. Although trustees at international schools share much in common with those at NAIS schools, international school boards are usually elected, their members are more likely to serve shorter terms, and their host countries are likely to consider institutional self-governance an anomaly. This handbook addresses challenges such as these, while providing an overview of the principles and practices of good trusteeship that are common to all independent school trustees.
The important areas covered by the International Trustee Handbook include the following:
- Organizing an effective board
- Developing a vision and planning strategically
- Developing and renewing board policies
- Distinguishing between board and staff roles
- Fulfilling the board's legal and financial duties
- Ensuring the school's financial strength
- Nurturing the special relationship between board and school head
- Relating to major constituencies and stakeholders
- Performing the role of the trustee
The International Trustee Handbook also provides a wealth of special features. Provocative new case studies have been developed especially for the trustee of an international board; sample forms can be adapted to each board's needs and environment; and updated resources (in print and online) are suggested for further study. In addition, an accompanying CD includes PowerPoint presentations that cover each chapter. Presenters who speak to international trustee audiences can use these PowerPoints to discuss what is covered in the book.
